Implementing an evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine Pain Program
Eskenazi Health's Integrative Pain Program Pain School
Established in 2010, EHIPP provides pain management and recovery through individual and group coaching in mindfulness, goal-setting, wellness, nutrition, and exercise. It treats patients with all types of pain, including pain related to osteoarthritis of the knee, migraines, degenerative spine, peripheral neuropathies, failed back syndrome, migraines, and fibromyalgia. The program emphasizes and demonstrates the benefits of control over participants’ breath, movement, and relaxation, which is accomplished with mind-body medicine skills and exercise/movement instructions. In short, the program facilitates participants’ ability to embrace the program’s de-emphasis on opioid-based pain care, allowing participants to achieve what Cathy Scott, EHIPP’s Behaviorist, calls the “ultimate goal” and that is the repatriation of their bodies, hopes and lives. This comes with a hard won understanding that pain can be a part of someone but need not define the entirety of one’s being.
This workshop will offer content domains related to the methods and curricula used in EHIPP. This will be part experiential and part didactic. The materials delivered will help participants feel and understand the modalities used and to possibly develop or enhance strategies employed some in their clinical environments.
