Dr. Archelle Georgiou is an experienced advisor, speaker, and author – and also happens to be a physician. But colleagues think of her as a lightning rod for change. As a senior executive and the Chief Medical Officer of UnitedHealthcare (1995-2007), she dismantled the company’s pre-certification policies that hassled patients and physicians. Since 2008, she has used Georgiou Consulting as her platform to coordinate a diverse portfolio of business initiatives – all focused on improving health and giving consumers a voice in their own care. Over the last 12 years, she has covered over 1100 medical topics during her weekly segments on KSTP-TV and consistently encourages viewers to overcome the power imbalance with their doctors so they can advocate for themselves. She is also adjunct faculty and Executive in Residence at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. Drawing on 20+ years of experience in patient care, managed care, media, and business, Archelle developed the CARES℠ Model, a five-step approach that consumers can use to make healthcare decisions that balance the best medical care with their personal, professional, social, and economic preferences. In February 2017, she published her first book, “Health Care Choices: 5 Steps to Getting the Medical Care You Want and Need” (Rowman & Littlefield). Dr. Georgiou earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was board-certified in Internal Medicine. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
